caught in the cross fire. president obama makes a historic visit to burma urging leaders of the long isolated country to embrace democracy. are you ready for black friday? some shoppers are already lined up to kick off the holiday shopping season but will shoppers spend enough to meet retailers expectations? and nature's power on full display as a massive waterspout threatens to touch down on dry land. this is "the cbs morning news" for monday, november 19th, 2012. good morning, everybody. good to be with you. i'm terrell brown. this morning, no signs of a letup in the fighting between israeli forces and palestinian militants on the gaza strip. israeli air strikes hit dozens of suspected targets overnight. an israeli missile destroyed two homes in a residential neighborhood, killing at least two children, according to gaza officials. militants fired more than 100 rockets on israel yesterday.

peace efforts are under way in cairo. susan mcginnis is in washington watching it all this morning. susan, good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning, terrell. the big worry now is a ground invasion on the part of israel and that is something that washington and other nations are working to keep from happening. a bomb shook gaza city awake monday morning. the abbas headquarters was just one of 80 sites the israeli military says it targeted in overnight attacks. palestinian officials say two adults and two children were killed in the early morning bombing. dozens more are missing, presumed buried under the rubble. this sixth day of air strikes follows an israeli offensive sunday that led to the deadliest day of attacks yet, at least 29 palestinians were killed, including four children when a bomb hit this apartment building. israeli officials say hamas is

using civilian buildings as cover to launch rockets across the border. in tel aviv, people on the street ran for cover when sirens signaled an approaching rocket. israel's iron-dome defense system has intercepted more than 240 rockets. during a trip to asia, president obama warned israel about expanding into a ground war, but he defended israel, fighting back. >> there's no country on earth that would tolerate missiles raining down on its citizens from outside its borders. >> reporter: u.n. supreme cour general ban ki-moon is there today. thousands of tanks and rocket launchers are waiting to cross the border. so cease-fire talks continue in egypt and the president says we'll have to see how much progress can be made in the next 24, 36, 48 hours. terrell? >> susan mcginnis in washington, starting us off this morning.

susan, thank you so much. speaking of the president, this morning he became the first american president to visit the asian nation of burma, a country known for its repressive military rule. the president's brief six-hour visit just ended. it included a meeting with long-time democracy activist aung san suu kyi. mr. obama said her release from years of house arrest and her election to parliament shows the country's progress towards democracy. >> i want to make a pledge to the people of this country that i am confident we can keep. that is, if we see continued progress towards reform, our bilateral ties will grow stronger and we'll do everything we can to help ensure success. >> the u.s. is expected to announce the resumption of aid programs to burma, depending on further reforms. today the burmese government began to release dozens of political prisoners. the president's next stop is cambodia. to the growing controversy now over the attack on the u.s. consulate in benghazi, libya.

some republicans are accusing the obama administration of a cover-up. four americans died in the attack. lawmakers want to know who was behind the so-called talking points used by the administration to explain what happened and why the final draft left out cia conclusions that al qaeda was involved. >> what is most disturbing, in my estimation, is the discrepancy about those talking points and the reality that existed on the ground and why the administration wasn't able to get the information in a more accurate picture of what transpired and delivered to the american people with confidence. >> lawmakers say former cia director david petraeus testified that the al qaeda reference was removed from the talking points though he wasn't sure why or by whom. the white house said the only change it made to the talking points was a factual edit. the woman whose extramarital affair with petraeus cost him his job is telling friends she is devastated by the fallout. paula broadwell and her family

arrived at their north carolina home yesterday. a friend says she regrets the damage she's done to her family and everyone else and wants to move forward. back to the president and the fiscal cliff now, during his asia trip, mr. obama said we're going to need a lot of prayer to solve a mix of tax hikes and spending cuts due to kick in at the beginning of next year. wyatt andrews reports. >> reporter: with the president in asia and congress already home for thanksgiving, the fiscal cliff is on temporary hold but with both sides signaling optimism. >> i'm confident that we can get our fiscal situation dealt with. >> i believe we can do this and avert the fiscal cliff that is right in front of us today. >> this new tone of optimism has not changed old partisan positions. democrats still insist there has to be a tax increase on the wealthy. >> if it's going to bring in revenue and the president made it very clear that the higher

income people have to pay their fair share. >> reporter: republicans still say their side isn't budging until the president agrees to cut spending. >> the two sides have identified the tax revenue that we're willing to discuss and now it's time to talk about the spending reduction. >> reporter: the deadline for solving the fiscal cliff is january 1st. but to many, the economy needs an agreement much sooner. >> hopefully it's possible by the middle of december so the confidence of the markets and most importantly, the confidence of the consumers returns to infuse our economy with demand which creates jobs. >> reporter: during this week's thanksgiving break, congressional budget experts will be crunching the numbers for the real negotiations a week from now, looking at what combination of new revenues and spending cuts could pull the nation back from the fiscal cliff. wyatt andrews, cbs news, washington.

"cbs money watch" now. optimism overç the fiscal cliff gives stocks a boost. you might not have had your last twinkie, god, i hope not. >> good morning to you. asian markets up today on fiscal cliff progress. the nikkei closed up 1.5% while hong kong's hang song rose just after 0.5%. wall street investors liked what they heard about the deficit reduction plan. on friday, the door closed up nearly 46 points while the nasdaq gained 16. black friday starts a day early this year. several of the big box stores will be open on thanksgiving but a recent survey shows 72% of shoppers plan to spend less. the national retail federation projects a spending increase of 4.1% to just over $580 billion, but that's about 1.5% lower than last year. around the country, some shoppers have already lined up outside stores so they could be

the first ones through the door friday morning. good news at the pump. the average price for a gallon of gas has fallen over 7 cents over the past two weeks. the lundberg survey puts the national average at $3.47 a gallon for regular. and twinkie lovers, you can stop hoarding those tasty treats. hostess brand appears to be in bankruptcy court today. experts say the cream-filled golden sponge cakes will actually survive. on friday, hostess declared chapter 11. since its products are so well known, twinkies, ding dongs and ho-hos will most likely be snapped up by other companies. i went to the store on saturday -- >> did you stock up? >> it was cleared out. there was nothing left for me to get. we're not even hoarding anything at this time. >> i like the hostess cakes with the cream filling inside. ashley morrison in new york. good to see you. happy monday. thank you so much.

gathering supplies, organizing volunteers. >> it's all good. >> no better way than giving back than feeding everyone. that's what we're doing. >> reporter: chris woods first job out of college was as a bouncer at this bar which he now owns and calls woody's. that bar is now the hub of the relief here in sea bright. >> we were basically covered in about 3 to 5 feet of water. >> reporter: wood is also coping with the blow sandy dealt to his own business. he bought the bar 15 months ago, on the day before hurricane irene struck. >> we came out unscathed but not this time. >> reporter: wood has to replace virtually everything in his restaurant, but that didn't stop him from helping out people who had it even worse. according to sea bright's deputy police chief, brett freedman. >> he basically stepped into action, bringing food and relief to residents and business owners

of sea bright. he did more than he ever had to do. >> all good. >> reporter: he'll have to keep relying on an army of volunteers as the town struggles to rebuild. and if residents can't have turkey on thanksgiving there will be plenty of food waiting for them here. john bentley, cbs news, sea bright, new jersey. police in missouri arrested a man suspected of plotting a colorado-style movie theater shooting. police near springfield say 20-year-old blake lammers confessed to a plan to open fire during a screening of the latest twilight movie. his mother called police saying she was worried her son planned to shoot people during the movie's opening weekend. police say lammers suffered from mental illness and was, quote, off his medication. up next, your monday morning weather. and in sports, a near record-setting performance in the nfl on a sunday that saw some tight finishes.

that's the winning touchdown, houston tops jacksonville, 43-37. schaub threw for 5 touchdowns and 527 yards, tied for second most in a single game in nfl history. finally, u.s. olympic gymnast michaela maroney is becoming an internet sensation again. you probably remember this widely circulated photo of maroney taken while she was awarded a silver medal on the vault at the olympics. she was favored to win gold. the face says it all. on thursday, maroney and the rest of the women's gymnastics team visited the white house. she re-created the scowl which she calls her not impressed face along with president obama. the white house released the photo over the weekend. i got it, right? kind of? she might not be impressed but we sure are. i like it. it's pretty cool. when we come back, big changes in san francisco which you might not see the next time
